The Day of Shabbat Rest is established as one of YaHoVaH’s commandments here in Genesis 2 and confirmed in Exodus 20:11
ESTABLISHED: GENESIS 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
GENESIS 2:2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
GENESIS2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
CONFIRMED: EXODUS 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
WHEN DID GOD HALLOW THE 7TH DAY? Answer: back on the 7th day of creation! The writer of Exodus clearly confirms that we are told to REMEMBER THE 7TH DAY! He is not telling us something NEW, he is reminding us to keep it because God decreed it way back then…
Remember it because God is distinguishing Himself as Creator and not just any little “g” god. There are many gods but there is only one God who creates and who is alive!
EXODUS 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
It was established on the 7th day of the Earth’s life and it was practiced before the Commandments were given. We’ll see THIS in Exodus 16:22-28 These verses tell the story of the manna from God to supply the needs of the Israelites. They are told by God through Moses that they can gather it for 6 days but on the 7th day they will not gather, but they could have enough for 2 days ONLY on the 6th day for the 7th. Gathering double portions any other day and it would rot and stink and have worms. But on the 6th day if they gathered double-it lasted through the 7th day with no problem. Here are the verses:
EXODUS 16:22 And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. 23 And he said unto them, This that which the LORD hast said, to morrow is the rest of the holy Shabbat unto the LORD; bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning. 24 And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade; and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.
25 And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a Shabbat unto the LORD; to day ye shall not find it in the field.
26 Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the Shabbat, in it there shall be none.
27 And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none.
28 And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?
29 See, for that the LORD hath given you the Shabbat, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.
30 So the people rested on the 7th day.
The fact that there was no rot or worms if gathered on the 6th day but happened if it was gathered double on any other day is the 23rd miracle of the Israelites on their Exodus from Egypt. Exodus 2:3 establishes the Law 23rd miracle seals the deal. Nice use of the 2 and the 3…
They were not given the commandments until Exodus 20!
The penalty God puts forth for profaning the Shabbat is death. [THIS IS WHAT WE ARE NO LONGER UNDER-the death penalty for not obeying HIS Laws.]
EXODUS 31:14 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
EXODUS 31:15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.
EXODUS 31:16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.
HEREIN LIES HOW WE ARE NO LONGER UNDER REGARDING THE LAW: WE DO NOT DIE FOR BREAKING THIS LAW OR ANY OTHER LAW BECAUSE Y’SHUA HAMASCHIACH DIED TO FREE US FROM THE PENALTY OF DEATH.
Salvation is by faith in that fact…in Y’shua’s, (Jesus) work, life, death and resurrection from the dead as YaHoVaH’s only begotten son. However, we are still required to keep the Commandments! We are not UNDER the Law in that we need to obey it to be SAVED, but if we are saved we should desire to spend the Day set aside by YHVH to fellowship with Him and pour forth to the people if we are His priests.
When we do not keep the Shabbat holy and sanctified unto YaHoVaH, the LORD the way He asked, it is probably because we are in idol worship and do not care to recognize the Creator the way He asked us to. (Even if we have been taught wrong, we accepted it because of idol worship which can be unknowingly). [Unknowingly could be one or more of these: traditions, family, sex, money, sports, work, alcohol/drugs, cigarettes…hopefully you get the picture]
The consequences to the Israelites for not keeping the Shabbat holy and sanctified were severe. It is cited as a reason for them going into bondage and for the city of Jerusalem getting overthrown. See the various verses: in JEREMIAH 17:27 and EZEKIEL 20:23-24
Also, why were they in captivity for 70 years? 2CHRONICLES 36:20-21 says, 2CHRONICLES 36:20 And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia: 2CHRONICLES 36:21 To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.
HOSEA predicted Shabbat would cease: HOSEA 2:11 I will also cause all her mirth to cease, her feast days, her new moons, and her sabbaths, and all her solemn feasts.
[We see the same verses in Revelation regarding Mystery Babylon (which the fallen “Gentile-age Church is…)]
The good news is that it was not going to be a permanent punishment, Isaiah 66:23 and Ezk 44:24 and Ezk 46:11. (AND the first Church didn’t suffer under this judgment just as we who are obedient will not suffer under the judgment.)
It is clear that God desires to spend quality time with us as a good Father and WE GET TO SPEND TIME WITH HIM IF WE ARE OBEDIENT TO HIS DESIRES!!! It is always amazing to me to hear Christians tell me that I do not have to stay home during the Shabbat because we are not under the Law. It is hard for me not to scream, “Listen silly, I GET to DO IT!”
Y’shua is always found in the Synagogue on the Shabbat and heals very often on the Shabbat because He is showing that people who honor YaHoVaH and He sees they have a need because He is spending time with the person and so heals to show His pleasure of the communication and their dedication.
AND since Y’shua is the Creator He is LORD of the Shabbat! He clearly showed this when he made clay/mud from the dirt of the ground and using his own spittle then applied it to a man’s eye sockets who was born blind and had no eyeballs. They were c r e a t e d by Y’shua the same way he formed man from the dust of the ground…
The Shabbat was given to commemorate the Creator and allow the created being, man, fellowship with Him.
Y’shua is Creator, John 1:1-3, Ephesians 3:9, Colossians 1:15,
The creator came into his creation and became incarnate as the created…colossal! Magnificent! Awesome! He is the fullness of the Godhead, bodily…what a salvation plan!
The scholarly Rabbi, Moses Maimonides had many writings in his attempt to bring clarity to the Word of God (Torah) and in his book, The Guide for the Perplexed Chapter 67 in Part One, He writes: Our Creator caused a repose to encompass the Universe on the 7th Day. What it means is that in the Hebraic symbols when translated they mean that when He “sanctified it” (7th day) the symbols mean He imposed His rest on all created things. This is astonishing!
AND it demonstrates to me that He is the GOOD HEAVENLY FATHER and as soon as He created man (in His own image) He wanted to celebrate the entire work and spend quality time with man and all that surrounded him. So cool!
Further, all things that needed to be created were created and can now function as He created them to. There were no more new creations and in fact the Law of Entropy demands that all things began to wind down from that moment on.
The Law of Entropy is one of the fundamental laws of the universe which is that all things lose something in the transfer of energy, space and time. The Bible shows examples of this in verses: PSALMS 102:25-26, ISAIAH 51:6 and MATTHEW 24:35 (By the way- the Law of Entropy is the primary Law that disproves Evolution…there are others of course.)
In ROMANS 8:21 The Holy Spirit tells us through Paul (Shaul) that entropy will be repealed! Let’s look at it: ROMANS 8:21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
SO, is this how the Earth suffered under the CURSE back in Genesis 2??? Is this when the Law of Entropy came into play? It certainly could be and we know that we will live in a “new Earth” one day and there will be a “new Heaven” as all things pass away and are “restored”.
Now, because of the fellowship of Shabbat the LORD healed people in need on Shabbat. There were SEVEN Healings recorded in the Gospels that the LORD performed on Shabbat:
- MARK 1:21-27 (Man with unclean spirit) And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught.
MARK 1:22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.
MARK 1:23 And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,
MARK 1:24 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.
MARK 1:25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.
MARK 1:26 And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.
MARK 1:27 And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.
2. MARK 1:29-31 And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
MARK 1:30 But Simon’s wife’s mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her.
MARK 1:31 And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.
3. JOHN 5:1-9 After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.JOHN 5:2 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.JOHN 5:3 In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.JOHN 5:4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.JOHN 5:5 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
JOHN 5:6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
JOHN 5:7 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
JOHN 5:8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
JOHN 5:9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
4. MARK 3:1-6 and MATTHEW 12:8-14 [We will only print out one here-same story]
MARK 3:1 And he entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had a withered hand.
MARK 3:2 And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse him.
MARK 3:3 And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth.
MARK 3:4 And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.
MARK 3:5 And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
MARK 3:6 And the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.
5. LUKE 13:10-17 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.
LUKE 13:11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.
LUKE 13:12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.
LUKE 13:13 And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.
LUKE 13:14 And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.
LUKE 13:15 The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?
LUKE 13:16 And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?
LUKE 13:17 And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.
6. LUKE 14:1-6 LU 14:1 And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.
LUKE 14:2 And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.
LUKE 14:3 And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?
LUKE 14:4 And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;
LUKE 14:5 And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?
LUKE 14:6 And they could not answer him again to these things.
7. JOHN 9:1-14 JOH 9:1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
JOHN 9:2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
JOHN 9:3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
JOHN 9:4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
JOHN 9:5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
JOHN 9:6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,
JOHN 9:7 And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.
JOHN 9:8 The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?
JOHN 9:9 Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.
JOHN 9:10 Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?
JOHN 9:11 He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.
JOHN 9:12 Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.
JOHN 9:13 They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.
JOHN 9:14 And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.
Okay, so it is important to note that The LORD of Shabbat is healing on Shabbat but He also healed any time He wanted to! There were skads of healings done on other days so it is NOT just a Shabbat thing.
Lord of Shabbat: MATTHEW 12:8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day. He is also LORD of Torah because He is the Word and He is LORD of Creation as we said it is cited in several passages.
After the crucifixion of the LORD a bunch of problems arose for the believers and it needs to be addressed in order for us to see where we are today…SO—
The first church consisted primarily of Jews who had accepted the salvation of Y’shua HaMaschiach and they were still going to the Temple every day and witnessing the God-ordained priests perform the daily sacrifice. (ACTS clearly shows this).
This must have presented a real problem for them-actually a set of problems. They knew Y’shua was the Lamb of God and these rituals were no longer necessary, yet they had no other formal Holy Place in which to gather and worship Creator. (Jews were the only people group who actually were worshipping the Creator and were in Covenant with Him through Shabbat and the Feasts).
What to do? Well, they began to go to one another’s homes and have teaching sessions outside the Temple in the outer courts. (Peter and John got arrested there, remember?) Then, God showed His judgments and the city of Jerusalem fell and the Temple was destroyed in 70 A.D
RIGHT NOW WE ARE IN THE SAME SITUATION!!! THE LORD OF THE LAMPSTANDS HAS VISITED US THROUGH HIS HOLY SPIRIT AND WE HAVE BEEN FOUND LACKING!!!
There are many of us who recognize this fact and are gathering in homes and such because the churches refuse to remove pagan practices from their places of worship and also refuse to honor Creator God in His Shabbat Rest! (ADD to this the full list of unclean practices taught that are okay for Christians to do but which are clearly labeled as FORNICATION by the LORD and should not even be done by married couples, and you see why we are where we are.)
There are well meaning teachers that say that because in Acts 15 we do not see that the Gentile believers had to honor the Shabbat-meaning it was not listed as one of the 4 things—then we are not required. However, the TEN COMMANDMENTS are for all people in a civilized world but are especially for those that are part of the New and Everlasting Covenant! The word new in that phrase is actually RENEWED—emphasis on the RE-.
YaH tells us that salvation is of the Jews and that they are the people who He used to try to reach out to all nations of people.
SO OUT OF ALL THIS TEACHING THE MAIN THINGS TO REMEMBER ARE THESE:
We are not under the Law of Sacrifice in order to be saved or to remove our sins.
We are not under the Laws of Moses with the penalty of breaking them being our death because the LORD Y’shua HaMaschiach took our place and was the substitutionary perfect sacrifice to die for us, in our place…
We are not under the Law, but we are privileged to GET TO know it and understand how precious we are to YHVH that He desires to be with us and shows us how to get along peaceably in this world.
